Classic Donut

Oooooohhhh Donutttttt

In the middle of social distancing in March 2020, I was craving for donuts. But to prevent any further contamination, I decided to make donuts from scratch! I looked at the pantry and grabbed myself the ingredients I needed. Fortunately enough, they were all pretty basic so I did not have to go outside to buy more.

I have never made donuts before, this was actually my first time and the following recipe worked really well!

Ingredients

  • 160ml
  • 50g
  • 5g
  • 1/2tsp
  • 350g
  • 1
  • 40g
  • 50g
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Dry yeast
  • Salt
  • Flour
  • Egg
  • Unsalted butter
  • Icing sugar

Method

Making the Dough

  1. In a large bowl combine milk, sugar, dry yeast together.
  2. Add the flour and salt to the milk mixture.
  3. Mixing
    a. If you do not have a mixer, knead with your hands for 20 minutes.
    b. If you do have a mixer, with a hook attachment, mix dry ingredients and milk mixture together at medium speed - about 10 minutes, texture of the dough needs to be bouncy when you touch it.
  4. Add in the egg after 1 minute.
  5. Add in the butter after 5 minute.
  6. After 12 minutes in the mixer, put the dough on the table and knead for 2 minutes with your hands.
  7. Shape the dough to a round shape and put it in a large bowl (sprinkle some flour to prevent sticking) and wrap it with a cling wrap.
  8. Proofing
    a. If you do not have an oven, let the dough rest at room temperature for about an hour.
    b. If you do have an oven, fill a bowl with boiling water and place it at the bottom rack, whilst the dough rests on the top rack for about 40-45 minutes.
  9. After proofing, take out the dough and knead it for another 2 minutes.
  10. Sprinkle a little flour on top, then, with a rolling pin, roll the dough to 4mm.
  11. With a cookie cutter (you can choose any size), start to shape the dough.

Frying

  1. Preheat the oil in a pan, make sure it is hot enough before you fry the dough.
    a. You will know it’s hot enough if it forms some bubbles, not a lot.
  2. Take off any excess flour on the dough.
  3. With medium heat, start frying them until it turns golden brown.
    a. Don’t put the fire on high! It will over colour the donut yet raw in the middle

Coating

  1. After the donut has cooled down, prepare your icing sugar in a bowl.
  2. Start coating the donut with icing sugar.

Voila! Your donuts are now ready to be eaten!
